Dear Saints,
For proof that the world tends towards upside-downness, we need look no further than the predominant understanding of inheritance. For most of us, it’s a question of what we’ll get because someone - usually someone we love - has passed away. But in Heaven’s eyes, inheritance is a question of what we can give because someone who loves us has died and risen again. We tend to conceive of inheritance as a matter of death, when we should be thinking of it as a matter of life.
Today’s psalm is written in the present tense: “You are my inheritance, O Lord!” The psalmist isn’t talking about tomorrow’s hope so much as today’s reality. If we are to inherit the life of God himself, we can’t wait. We must live into his will right now, and every moment thereafter.
Inheritance offers a sense of security and, very often, an opportunity to dream bigger. And that’s exactly what’s in store for those who embrace God’s plans and purposes. A life in which our hearts are glad, our souls rejoice, and even our bodies abide in confidence is ours for the choosing.
Christ’s Peace,
Father Daniel
