Dear Saints,
This weekend's Gospel passage has Jesus in Capernaum, teaching in the synagogue on a sabbath.
All of a sudden, there appears on the scene a man "with an unclean spirit." He confronts Jesus with shrill threats before Jesus commands his silence and submission.
This, we hear from the crowd, is authority in action.
Jesus has power to teach and to heal because he is tapping into the authority of God his Father, and is totally given over to his purposes.
What should catch our attention, I'd say, is that the power of God is best seen as service. The authority of God finds expression in acts of sincere self-giving love.
Just as Jesus faced down demons in Capernaum that day, so now he wants to confront the world's darkness with the light of Divine Love working in and through his faithful followers.
I love you, my friends, and I look forward to seeing you soon.
Christ's Peace,
Father Daniel
